South Africa’s Red List of Terrestrial Ecosystems (RLEs)

چکیده

Ecosystem level indicators are emerging as important pillars of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework Convention on Biological Diversity; at same time, IUCN Red List Ecosystems (RLEs) is experiencing rapid uptake. We applied a systematic RLE assessment to 456 terrestrial ecosystems in South Africa between 2017 and 2021. What sets apart this endeavour that an independently formulated ecosystem threat status indicator was developed 2004 2008 list threatened (effectively proto RLE) integrated into national environmental regulatory 2011. Through this, Critically Endangered types were afforded form statutory protection through increased regulation land-use change activities. describe transition focus both technical steps incorporating best available data credible assessment, unique social legal processes ensure conservation sector understood supported proposed replacement existing (2011) with (2021). discuss policy development required Africa, pros cons maintaining legislative link for implementation.

Scientific Foundations for an IUCN Red List of Ecosystems

An understanding of risks to biodiversity is needed for planning action to slow current rates of decline and secure ecosystem services for future human use. Although the IUCN Red List criteria provide an effective assessment protocol for species, a standard global assessment of risks to higher levels of biodiversity is currently limited. In 2008, IUCN initiated development of risk assessment cr...

Establishing IUCN Red List Criteria for Threatened Ecosystems

The potential for conservation of individual species has been greatly advanced by the International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) development of objective, repeatable, and transparent criteria for assessing extinction risk that explicitly separate risk assessment from priority setting. At the IV World Conservation Congress in 2008, the process began to develop and implement comparab...

Can South Africa Afford to Become Africas First Welfare State?

This paper assesses the economy-wide impact of implementing and financing a universal or basic income grant (BIG) in South Africa. The various financing scenarios suggested by the proponents of the grant are presented, and these are compared using an applied general equilibrium model for the South African economy. The results indicate that the required changes in direct and indirect tax rates n...

Soil nematodes in terrestrial ecosystems.

There has been much work on plant-feeding nematodes, and less on other soil nematodes, their distribution, abundance, intrinsic properties, and interactions with biotic and abiotic factors. Seasonal variation in nematode fauna as a whole is correlated with factors such as moisture, temperature, and plant growth; at each site nematode distribution generally reflects root distribution. There is a...

A practical guide to the application of the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems criteria.

The newly developed IUCN Red List of Ecosystems is part of a growing toolbox for assessing risks to biodiversity, which addresses ecosystems and their functioning. The Red List of Ecosystems standard allows systematic assessment of all freshwater, marine, terrestrial and subterranean ecosystem types in terms of their global risk of collapse. In addition, the Red List of Ecosystems categories an...
